What is cortisol?

Cortisol is a vital hormone that is released during stress, among other things, and is therefore often called the “stress hormone”. The production of cortisol occurs in the adrenal cortex, which in turn is controlled by signals from the brain. Cortisol has a variety of different functions, including regulating the metabolism of sugar, fat and protein in the body. Cortisol also affects the functions of the heart and blood vessels, skeletal muscle, the central nervous system and many other tissues. Cortisol is vital in the right amount, and helps the body to perform better, both physically and mentally in stress-related situations. Cortisol also inhibits inflammation in the body.

How is cortisol measured?

The cortisol test is a simple saliva test that you perform yourself at home. The method is well-proven and has been used in healthcare for a long time. Saliva is collected in test tubes on two occasions over a 12-hour period, once in the morning and once in the evening. The samples are then sent to our lab for analysis and you will receive your test results digitally within a few days of the lab receiving your test.

Symptoms of high cortisol

  • Fatigue
  • Muscle weakness
  • Nausea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Decreased sex drive (men)
  • Menstrual disorders (women)
  • Infertility
High cortisol levels can be caused by several factors but are most often associated with stress. The body can handle cortisol surges during a stressful period, but high levels of cortisol over a longer period place a heavy burden on the body and can have serious consequences.

Symptoms of low cortisol

  • Lethargy
  • Brain fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Weight gain
  • Chilliness, low body temperature
Low cortisol levels may indicate adrenal insufficiency (adrenal fatigue).. When cortisol levels in the body are too low, we become lethargic and lethargic. One effect of long-term low cortisol levels can be fatigue syndrome. Long-term treatment with cortisone preparations can also cause the adrenal glands to reduce or completely stop producing cortisol.

Lack of cortisol - Addison's disease (Adrenal insufficiency)

If you have a lack of cortisol, you may have an autoimmune disease, Addison's - a life-threatening disease if not treated. The disease means that the body's immune system attacks the adrenal cortex, where cortisol is produced. Symptoms include muscle weakness, fatigue and weight loss. Addison's disease can be detected by measuring cortisol in the blood in the morning. A low value may indicate adrenal insufficiency.

Frequently asked questions

How safe and reliable is the test?
It is just as safe and reliable as if you had taken it through healthcare services. This of course assumes that you follow the instructions and submit the test within the specified time.
Why can it be a good idea to test your cortisol level?
Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands that plays an important role in the body's stress response. Cortisol levels can be affected by many factors, including stress, sleep, diet and exercise. Here are a few reasons why you may want to test your cortisol: Symptoms of adrenal fatigue: Prolonged stress can lead to adrenal fatigue, which may cause symptoms such as fatigue, sleep disturbances, digestive problems and reduced sex drive. Cortisol testing can be used to assess whether your adrenal glands are functioning as they should and to help establish a possible diagnosis of adrenal fatigue. Symptoms of Cushing's syndrome: Cushing's syndrome is a condition caused by excessively high levels of cortisol in the body. Symptoms may include weight gain, muscle weakness, increased appetite and high blood pressure. A cortisol test can help establish a diagnosis and guide treatment. Evaluate the effectiveness of cortisol treatment: Cortisol can also be used as a medication to treat conditions such as inflammatory diseases or adrenal insufficiency. A cortisol test can help assess whether the treatment is working as intended. Evaluate stress levels: Cortisol levels can be affected by stress levels. A cortisol test can help evaluate your stress levels and identify whether you need to make lifestyle changes to manage your stress. It is always important to discuss cortisol testing with your doctor to get advice on what is best for your specific situation.
So I spit into a test tube and then you can analyze it?
Not quite. You will place a swab in your mouth. It resembles a pacifier but quickly absorbs your saliva. After a few minutes it is filled with saliva. You then press the saliva into a specially designed test tube. After that, tighten the airtight cap and simply place the test tube in the enclosed return envelope, and we take care of the rest.
When will I receive the result?
You will receive your result within approximately 8-12 business days. After public holidays and during vacation periods, processing times may be slightly longer.
Am I completely anonymous? Does my doctor get access to my test results?
No, no one other than you can see your test results. Not even we can see them. In theory, our laboratory can see your test results, but they cannot see your name. In other words, you are completely anonymous. Where is this test produced? Everything is produced and quality-controlled within the EU. The analysis is also performed within the EU. This means that your test result is handled by highly trained personnel with extensive expertise.
Why is cortisol analysis needed?
All hormones in the body are linked to different bodily functions and tasks. When one hormone becomes imbalanced, it affects other hormones and bodily functions. Both low and high cortisol levels are associated with stress. Short-term stress causes the adrenal glands to release more cortisol. Long-term stress means that the body constantly has a lot of cortisol in circulation, meaning the adrenal glands are continually pushed and eventually may no longer be able to release the amounts of cortisol required. Prolonged and high stress can therefore lead to adrenal exhaustion, which means that the cortisol level in the body drops sharply. By examining the body's cortisol level, it is possible to identify abnormalities and thereby help prevent future complications and illness.
What happens if you have too much cortisol in your body?
High cortisol secretion can be harmful and over time may cause, among other things, abdominal obesity, atherosclerosis, type 2 diabetes, depression and impaired immune function.
What happens if you have too little cortisol in your body?
Cortisol secretion that is too low can negatively affect the body in several ways and, in some cases, be life-threatening. Low cortisol can lower the body's blood pressure, which in turn can lead to dizziness and other symptoms. Metabolism and immune function may also be impaired. Low cortisol levels can be caused by Addison's disease, which is life-threatening if left untreated.
How do I receive my analysis result?
Once your test has been analyzed, you will receive an email from our partner IDkollen. The email contains a link where you can log in and retrieve your report. Login is secure using BankID.
